Auto Insurance: How To Find the Right One

In many states, auto insurance is very competitive.  Some states actually cap the rates so that regardless of which company you choose, you pay the same rate.

If you live in a state where auto insurance is highly competitive, you may have seen the crazy marketing campaigns from companies such as Allstate, Geico, State Farm and Progressive.  These companies have been so successful in the ads that they have created that many of those ads went viral on social media.

Think back for a moment to State Farm's "Jake from State Farm".  "Oh yeah, what are you wearing, Jake from State Farm" says the woman who finds her husband on the phone in the middle of the night speaking to an agent from, none other than - State Farm.  Funny!

Geico has one of the most popular of all time with their "Hump Day" videos featuring a camel that said "Mike, mike mike mike mike" and wandered through an office.  Insane but genius.  And addictive.

Allstate has capitalized on Mayhem.  He has become a social media persona with his own Facebook page featuring commercials only shown to his followers.  "So get Allstate and be better protected from Mayhem like me".  Hysterical.

If you are in a state that promotes all of these insurance companies (and more, there are many, many more), how do you choose the best auto insurance? Do you pick a favorite ad and go with it? That's what these companies hope you will do!

Here are some things to look for:

  • military discounts
  • government discounts
  • student or good grade discounts
  • good driver discounts
  • multi policy discounts
  • safe driver course discounts
  • roadside assistance at little or no added cost
  • ability to speak with a local representative to make changes to your policy or if you have questions
  • someone who can fully explain your options
  • payment plan options
  • policy on coverage in the event of fault accident
  • policy on coverage in the event of no-fault accident
  • policy on theft
  • deductibles and ability to change them
  • rating of the company from the state insurance commissioner

One you find companies that offer the items you need, get quotes from each one.  Insurance companies can vary drastically in rates.  Also keep in mind that insurance companies will consider your driving record and credit when quoting your rate.  The better your driving record and credit score, the less you will pay for your insurance plan.

If you are shopping for a new car or truck, check your insurance rate first.  Some vehicles have a higher safety rating than others, making their insurance costs less in the long run.

Once you find an auto insurance company you can rely on, its best to stay put.  Studies show that moving around actually hurts your rates.
